Common Cold Prevention Tips

Common Cold Prevention Tips from Millennium Medical Care in Fairfax, VAThe common cold is appropriately named. This illness is perhaps the most common health problem that people experience. It will affect individuals of all ages, including babies and the oldest patients. You have almost certainly had your share of colds in the past. The good news is that there are ways to minimize your risks of having this sickness going forward. Following these tips can keep colds at bay.

An overview of the common cold

Colds are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person. Typically, one of three viruses causes colds: rhinovirus, coronavirus, and RSV. Exposure occurs at close contact through touch or droplets from coughing and sneezing. A cold will usually hang around for seven to 10 days. However, some people may have symptoms for just three or four days, while others may be sick with a cold for a few weeks.

The symptoms can vary widely and may be different from person to person. Generally, an individual will have a runny or stuffy nose along with a sore throat. Coughing and sneezing will usually be common while battling a cold. A person may also have congestion or difficulty breathing. Headaches and a low-grade fever are also possible symptoms.

Handwashing

One of the most effective preventive measures is for people to wash their hands. Handwashing with soap for at least 20 seconds can kill the viruses that cause the common cold. This should occur throughout the day. It is especially important after using the restroom. Parents should be vigilant and help their kids wash.

Sanitizing

A person’s home can be a breeding ground for the common cold. Sanitizing frequent contact points is vital. Using a sanitizing agent, people should wipe down touchpoints such as doorknobs, light switches, and countertops. Sanitizing other areas such as chairs, tables, walls, and toys can also help.

Stay home

It is not reasonable to avoid leaving the home at all during peak common cold season. People have to go out for work, school, and other necessary activities. But reducing contact with other people will help to prevent colds. As much as possible, stay away from large gatherings, especially ones where people will be close to one another.

Avoid being around sick people

Along with avoiding crowds, staying away from people who are ill will contribute to common cold prevention. If an individual is sick, people should not spend time around the person. The same goes for the sick individual. Staying away from others while battling the cold is vital. Instead, the person should rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take over-the-counter medication to get well once more.
