Primary Care: Breaking Down Blood Pressure

Looking for some beneficial information on primary care services? Whenever you are in need of services that can benefit your overall health, you will need to contact your primary care provider for their advice and direction. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, measuring your blood pressure regularly is quick and painless and the only way to know whether your pressure is high and keep on top of your health.

Breaking down blood pressure

Blood pressure readings are very important to one’s overall good health. There are both healthy and unhealthy blood pressure ranges, making it necessary for everyone to understand their numbers so they can control their blood pressure. There are two different numbers that are important here, with the first number being related to the systolic blood pressure and the second diastolic blood pressure. Both numbers are important, as they both give information on one’s current state of blood pressure. Your primary care provider can cover this in detail for you.

Systolic blood pressure

The first number, the top number of your blood pressure, measures the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart beats. A systolic number that is right around 120 is considered to be normal. When the number is between 120 and 129, one’s blood pressure is considered to be elevated. When the number is between 130 and 139, this shows that the patient is in stage one of high blood pressure. A number between 140 and 179 means they are entering stage two of high blood pressure. A number above 180 is referred to as a hypertensive crisis and requires immediate medical assistance.

Diastolic blood pressure

The second number, the bottom number of your blood pressure, measures the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart is resting in between heartbeats. A diastolic number that is right around 80 is considered to be normal. When the number is between 80 and 89, it qualifies as the first stage of high blood pressure. A number between 90 and 119 is the second stage of high blood pressure. A number above 120 is referred to as a hypertensive crisis and requires an immediate phone call to a medical professional for advice.

How do you improve blood pressure?

When it comes to improving one’s blood pressure numbers, it will depend on whether they have low blood pressure or high blood pressure. A few low blood pressure treatments include drinking more water, adding more salt to one’s diet and wearing compression stockings. A few high blood pressure treatments include exercising regularly, reducing salt intake and learning how to manage the stresses of everyday life.
